Five signs your ad account is leaking budget
Clicks without sales, rising costs and reports nobody trusts. These are the warning signs we look for first when we audit an ad account.
Most ad accounts don't fail in one dramatic moment. They leak, a little every day, through settings nobody checked and assumptions nobody tested. These are the five signs we look for first when we audit an account.
1. You're getting clicks but not sales
Plenty of traffic with very few enquiries or orders usually means the problem sits after the click. Check that your landing page matches the promise in the ad, loads quickly on a phone and makes the next step obvious. A slow page or a confusing checkout can undo even the best campaign.
2. Your conversion numbers don't match reality
If Meta reports 40 purchases and your shop shows 22, your tracking is broken somewhere. Missing or duplicated conversion events don't just make reports wrong, they teach the platforms to find the wrong people. Setting up the Meta Conversions API, the TikTok Events API and Google's enhanced conversions properly is often the single biggest improvement an account can make.
3. The same ads have been running for months
Creative wears out. As the same people see the same ad again and again, click-through rates fall and costs climb. On Meta and TikTok especially, a steady rhythm of new hooks, formats and angles is what keeps results stable.
4. You're paying for searches you never wanted
On Google, open your search terms report. If you see searches for jobs, free alternatives, competitors' customer service lines or products you don't sell, you're paying for clicks that will never convert. Negative keywords and tighter match types fix this quickly.
5. Nobody can explain what changed
If costs jumped last month and nobody can tell you why, the account isn't being managed, it's being watched. Every change should have a reason, and every report should tell you in plain language what happened, why it happened and what's being done next.
What to do next
If two or more of these sound familiar, your budget is probably working harder for the platforms than for you. A structured audit shows exactly where the leaks are and which fixes will pay back fastest.
